Last week subscribers were invited to a lunch time workshop in which we explored some of the blocks around entering competitions. It’s important to me that my work as a facilitator includes the psychological effects of the writer life. Competitions and magazine submissions are loaded with potential imposter syndrome, and potential rejection pain. There are some easy exercises in the downloadable video below that will help you to assess what it is you want a competition win to do for you and how to manage those feelings of rejection.

In this post you’ll find my own general process as a competition judge. It’s helpful if you are a writer to see the other side of the process, the behind the scenes process, though I can only speak for myself and not other judges.

If you yourself are at a point in your career in which you are being approached to judge writing competitions, this post might help you plan your own judging responses. Scroll down for this, and the powerpoint from last week’s workshop and the video of the workshop for you to follow along at your own pace!
