Autumn at Notes from the Margin
What's in store for paid subscribers in September, October, November
Last week while I had my head down over my laptop I heard an unmistakable sound : an enormous skein of geese flying over the house. Autumn arriving in wing beats and goose calls. Last weekend the circus big top that plants itself between the holiday parks all summer holidays was taken down over night, leaving just a patch of yellow grass and a row of porta-loos. This morning dew on the grass and an utter stillness, only broken by the flit of two late house martins. Reader, the season is turning over, autumn is on the doorstep.
What can paid subscribers expect from Notes from the Margin in autumn?
Every month:
At least two paywalled subscriber-only essays per month. Some of these paywalled posts will be directly aimed at writers, offering practical help and guidance. Some of these paywalled posts will be behind the scenes of the writer life offering insider glimpses into what can go wrong, and right. Some of these paywalled posts will be more personal, the sort of life writing, or work in progress writing, that I only want to share with a select few people.
The monthly write along. What is a write along? The Write-Along is an hour of communal writing. We begin with a reading, an optional prompt and then we settle down to some writing in the zoom room. Feel free to bring along a long term project, or use the space in another creative way. This is a place to be creative together, a gentle accountability to your creative self. Dates and times below.
BRAND NEW - The Notes from the Margin Writer’s Surgery. I’m opening up 12 slots for subscribers who want a mini feedback session with me. I’ll be running surgeries all day, morning, afternoon and evening on the 20th November. Each slot is fifteen minutes long and can be used as a place for you to get some guidance on your writer life, or/and for specific feedback. You don’t have to have work prepared for critique, but as part of your slot I am offering brief feedback on ONE poem of up to 40 lines, OR a 300 word piece of prose - a piece of fiction, a piece of creative non fiction, memoir, an essay, a blog post, a cover letter, anything you would like a little help on. These slots are only open to paid subscribers. You must be a paid subscriber when you book your slot AND on the date of the surgery. ALL SURGERIES WILL BE CONDUCTED VIA ZOOM.

OTHER STUFF
I still have places left for my upcoming workshop Finding Your Self in the Landscape
Saturday 27th September 10am - 1pm UK time
Finding Your Self in the Landscape
A Narrative Non-fiction Workshop
How is the physical human body reflected in the landscape?
How does the physical body persist in the landscape?
How do we open our senses to the environment around us?
How do we identify and explore the barriers faced by the physical body in the environment?
How do we weave this into narrative non-fiction? How do we write the story of our physical selves in the environment?
Are you a writer wishing to locate themselves physically within the landscape, but feeling disconnected? Do you want some jumping off points to further your own narrative non fiction?

So many yummy offerings! I want to take you up on ALL OF THEM. Also, I would love to know at some point on your Substack your thoughts on shifting between genres as you are doing so successfully. It's like we're always told 'no, you're fiction or non fiction' but I don't want to accept this and so I am definitely looking to you as my writing hero for someone who is not afraid to follow their craft wherever it takes them :)
